and the computer says it is connected.

when i do a network diagnostic for Windows XP i get the following message:

Windows cannot connect to the internet using HTTP, HTTPS, or FTP. This is probably caused by firewall settings on this computer.

Check the firewall settings for the HTTP port (80), HTTPS port (443) and FTP port (21).

You might need to contact your internet service provider (ISP) or the manufacturer of your firewall software.

I have fiddled with the firewall settings and even turned it off and still it will not connect to a website.

if anyone is familiar with this problem, plz share how you fixed it.

thanks

Solution
Click the Tools menu in Internet Explorer and go to Internet Options then click the Connection tab then on the LAN button. If there are ticks in the section relating to Proxy connections, remove them and if there is no tick in "Automatically detect settings", put one in, click Apply and OK. Restart IE and see if that helped.
