I'm considering purchasing an HP ENVY-1164ca laptop with an AMD A8-4500m CPU. I've found a really nice deal, but I'm worried that the CPU might not be fast enough to optimally meet my needs. If that turns out to be the case, can I upgrade the CPU in the future or am I stuck with the one it comes with?

If it is possible to replace the CPU, what are my options for compatible upgrades? Can I upgrade to an AMD A10-4600m or A10-5750m?

Background info: I'm going to school for software development, so that's mainly what I need this laptop for at the moment. I was using a 5 year old Dell Inspiron 1545 with a Intel Pentium T4200 CPU and 3GB of RAM, and it would get pretty slow at times opening Visual Studio or debugging apps. That laptop has since died (twice) and I figure it's time to replace it. The only thing that has me concerned is that the A8-4500m may not be much of an improvement.

What do you think?

Solution
All the stated apus are the same socket FS1r2 but you need to make sure the mobo bios is compatible. You can try to contact hp. The 4500m is more than double the performance of the t4200. But if a program opens slow it's not the cpu, it's the hdd.

Thanks for the advice. I went ahead and ordered the ENVY. Hopefully it arrives by the end of the week so I can start using it and see if it's fast enough for me.
