You may have to format the pendrive before you can use it for virtual memory. You can do this by right clicking the drive, and then clicking format. Use quick format. But to be honest, using a USB/Pendrive for virtual memory is not really worth it. I doubt there will be any performance boost at all. This is because The read/write speed of a usb is much slower than RAM, and the technology of a usb is not geared toward accessing small pieces of data at a time. If your system has to rely too heavily on virtual memory, you will notice a significant performance drop.

If your using win 8 or 7 you must insert your pendrive in a USB version 2.0 or higher port and windows will show the AutoPlay dialog. One of the options, usually the last, is "Speed up my System". Select it and you will be taken to the properties window of the pen, in the ReadyBoost tab. From there you can make your settings.

Windows will refuse to ReadyBoost your pendrive if it doesn't meet the performance requirements!
My guess is that it also requires the NTFS file system!

If your pendrive does not meet the requirements for virtual memory, it wont show in the tab.

Hey! I was facing the same problem, but then I changed the Letter Path of the USB to the available ones in the virtual memory tab. For example, the tab was showing me C:, D:, and E: drives. To change the USB path to E:, right click on My Computer-->Manage

Then, right click on your letter that is being showed in the virtual memory tab, and change the letter to something else. Then, change the USB to the shown letter on the VM tab. Hope it works!

Necropost, but this is true. Removable devices can only be used as a filesystem cache (Readyboost). They cannot be used for swapping (pagefile).
