Hi. I got a gift card and I was thinking of upgrading my memory from 4gb to 8gb. My computer goes something like this:

ASUS P5N-D mobo
intel core 2 q8200 @ 2.33Ghz
4GB DDR2 @ 800Mhz
GTX 550 ti
Corsair CX430 watt
Windows 7 64-bit

My questions are:
Is it worth investing the money into more memory for the computer (that just turned 6) when I run moderm games like skyrim and COD: Ghosts @ 30fps (normal/medium detail)?
If not, is there a better investment for this computer or should I give up and start over?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I got a $300 DELL gift card if that helps so I have a budget of ~$400 dollars

I would say it's time for you to upgrade the machine.

Games are only going to get more intensive and you don't want to be left behind.

DDR2 RAM is quite old too now.

You could sell off your entire system , and set a budget that you want the new things in, and then we can help you decide what to buy to give you the best gaming experience.

Completely overhauling your current PC and building a new one will definitely be the better option, however I would recommend waiting until you have a budget of $600 or more, otherwise you're not going to be able to build anything that great.

What could I do for say ~$400 if I just get a motherboard/cpu/memory and kept everything else or is that a bad idea? I'm a super tight budget. Sorry if I'm doing this wrong

Give the first priority to the mobo, cpu and memory,,,these guys are much more experienced than me,,they will suggest you some great ones,,,you can keep the graphics card and PSU for now,,,but do upgrade them when you have more budget

Although wait is recommended, there is one option for you under $400:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

CPU: Intel Core i5-4440 3.1GHz Quad-Core Processor ($181.98 @ SuperBiiz)
Motherboard: ASRock Fatal1ty H87 Performance ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($99.99 @ Newegg)
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($64.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $346.96
(Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.)

That would be fine.

You can keep your GPU and PSU.

In 400 dollars, you should do this...

http://pcpartpicker.com/user/BAssim/saved/3QKu

That amounts to 360 dollars.

Also you can sell your old parts too.

So you should be good to go afterwards.

I have no idea what the differences in H87 and B85M chipsets. I know 3.4>3.1 though! I have an old unbranded HP case I got for free that can fit a full atx sized motherboard if that helps.

True that.

But in the end, I wonder if it really matters to him if he gets a mATX or an ATX.

Anyways, your point is vindicated too and your specifications are fine ;)
