ASUS R280x is not working! Why?

Hi all

I just bought the ASUS R9 280X-DC2- 3GD5 and it does not work correctly in my machine. (Before I had the ASUS radeon 6950DCII).

Starting games, makes the screen freeze, then goes to black screen, and then goes back to Windows Desktop.

When running "Windoes experience index" the test crashes from the "Direct3D 9 Texture Load Assessment" part and forward. Screen freezes, then goes black, then crashes to windoes desktop.
Then I get the message "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered". Looking at the 'Windows event viewer' it says it's a warning with event ID 4101 "Display driver amdkmdap stopped responding and has successfully recovered."

Sometimes Chrome browser crashes, with same procedure.
And sometimes doing nothing actually, the pc crashes just the same way.

Running the BurnInTest for all the hardware (CPU, RAM, graphics, etc.) I only get errors from the 3D graphics test. Again screen freezes, black screen, the goes back to desktop, with the above mentioned message.

I have reinstalled windows 7.
I have deinstalled the catalyst drivers, and afterwards using the "Display Driver Uninstaller" from Guru3D, in safe mode, to clean the rest of the drivers. then reinstalling catalyst drivers.
All my drivers seem to be the newest.
I also updated the 280X card bios to the newest v. 015.041. On a forum thread many people using this card (or actually the TOP model card, called DC2T) where having graphics errors and weird artefacts etc.) I had those too, and updating to this bios version fixed that issue. But PC still crashes.

In another forum thread (also german), people who have this exact same card and errors as I do, are returning it.

Installing ASUS GPU tweak program, lets me set down the GPU clock, and in some cases the "Windows experience index test" then works.. But games still crashes.

The graphics card seems to run silent, and no alarms when booting pc. Two little leds on the card are green, which indicates the card receives enough PSU power.

These are my PC components:

PSU: Silent Pro M600 RS-600-AMBA-D3
Core i5 cpu
8GB ram
Gigabyte P55A-UD3 (rev. 1.0)

I don't know what the problem is? :(
Anyone's got a clue?

Thanks
P

Solution
some of the Graphics cards are factory overclocked, you might want to decrease clock speed of your gpu starting from 50MHz or so. I am not sure if it would solve your problem, just give it a try.

Wow, it looks like it is solved now!
Yes this graphics card is factory Overclocked, to GPU clock 1000MHz. I have set it back to 'standard' for an 280X card, at 850 MHz. Everything seems to run perfect now. Tried CoD Ghosts game, and BurnInTest 3D graphics test at 82% load, everything passed.
Seems like this was the problem the whole time...!

Would you recommend that I keep this card or return it?
I mean what if the card does not work in 1-2 weeks or so. Is there any other program I should run in order to test if it's good enough?

I have no intention of overclocking a card, but since the card is overclocked as default, I would assume it should run without problems, right? They can't just market a card that does not run right?

glad that solved your problem.
If you are looking for any other card, then it might be helpful by getting it in exchanged. Like you said you don't want to overclock then you would be good with your current card. Just to test, run stress test on your gpu just to make sure it doesn't cause any further problems. There is nothing wrong with card, sometimes due to hardware doesn't support extreme overclocked profile of your gpu, so they start causing errors or instability.
Good luck :)

:( Okay, I just ran another stresstest, with GPU clock at 950MHz, and the test failed. I then set it back to 850MHz, and I suddenly got artefacts and black boxes, surfing the net through chrome.. Why is that?
Perhaps I just should take the card back, seems unstable. what do you think?

that seems odd, if test fails then i wouldn't suggest to taking risk by keeping that card with you. If you have encountered problem now, it's sure that it won't last long with you. So yes, send it back and these are common problems with TOP cards(Don't know it's due to your hardware configuration or card has problem in itself for sure). So concluding the idea it may run fine with some games but as time goes and your gpu will load more and more in the coming time, you will be in trouble again. So, send it back for your own good and get other version, not TOP.

I have another day to test the card, before I return it to the shop. (The shop says it will have to take it in to testing, I cannot just get another one..)
So please, if you have any other solutions, things I can test, that would be very helpful! Appreciate it.

I just saw on the graphics card package, that a 750W PSU is required! Mine is 600W. What do you think? Other people around forums, say that 500W should be enough.

I am using Cooler Master Silent Pro M600 RS-600-AMBA-D3. It is 80 Plus compliant with over 85% efficiency. I am using Two 6+2 pin PCI-E connectors to the graphics card, and on the graphics card, two little LEDs above the powet connectors shine green. Please see this picture of its' output specs: http://tinypic.com/r/29msj0j/8
It says 40Amps at 12V, but beneath that it says total output 480W.. What do you think

Max TDP or max power consumption for your card is 250 Watts. So, 480watts are overkill for single gpu.

So my 600w PSU is ok, although it says 750W recommended on the box?

Could it be wrong use of display connector? I am using a iiyama G2773HS monitor with 120Hz and a DVI connection.

i hope you are using Dual-Link cable inside DVI-D port of gpu. And psu is good, don't worry.

These are my pc specs: http://tny.cz/51c5607f. I will check XMP, but don't think it is enabled. I never overclock anything.

And yes I told the shop via phone today, that I have stress tested multiple times etc. but they just said they need to take the card in for testing. Can't do anything.. :(

no need to be sad about that. Everything will work out good.
XMP profile will just provide help you to perform better. Just test by enabling it.

i know it won't matter a lot with your dedicated gpu, but it was just another suggestion which i thought you could give a try. Till now you have done everything you could, so just let them do their thing with testing your gpu and wait until they come to conclusion.
Good luck mate, hope everything become alright. And let me know, what they concluded at last.

I enabled XMP, so far no extra problems.

I just put the GPU clock to 946MHz, without any problems. So weird yesterday GPU was about 950MHz, and crashed all the time..

Okay I will give them back the card for testing tomorrow, I will let you know.

But you don't think it is driver related? Or software related?
