I have been trying to sort this out for the last year, however have not been able to figure it out... hopefully some of you guys can help?

Every now and then both my monitors will fade to black, then come back... I can not remember it happening while playing a game, but it does happen while watching video.

For awhile I thought it might be my Graphics cards, but I have just replaced with it a GTX 780 (used to have a GTX 470) and it still happens... It must be software but I am unable to work out where to start to fix it, suggestions?

My System:
Monitors: Samsung Syncmaster PX2370, Samsung Syncmaster 226BW
GPU: GTX 780
CPU: i7 - 3930K
Memory: 16GB (4x4GB G Skill DDR3-1600)
Motherboard: Asus P9X79
Audio Card: Creative SB X-Fi + Onboard (both used)
Storage: 120GB OCZ-VERTEX 3 + 500GB & 2TB HDDs
PSU: Corsair HX850

*Edit* This happens during active use, so its unlikely a power saving feature.

You probably just have them set to go into sleep mode after a very short period of time. You can fix it by going to control panel and selecting power options. Then select "change plan settings" and "change advanced power settings". Finally scroll down until you see "sleep" and expand it. Change it to never, and your screen shouldn't go black anymore.

Sorry, should have made it clear that this happens while the PC is in active use. I did double check all the power settings you mentioned, but they are set to never.

Its a Corsair Hx850 (850W), Will have to give it a few days with only one monitor and see if that changes anything. Its not a daily thing though (well not normally) so could take awhile. I'll post again when I know more, thanks for the help so far :)

Ok, so we can rule out any issues with your power supply. At this point I'm suspecting one of two things:

1) You have some dust in one of the ports on your monitor (does not have to be the one you are connecting the cord to). Sometimes dust will get into one of the ports and it will trick the monitor into thinking that you have your cable attached to the wrong port. It's rare, but it does sometimes happen. The best way to fix it is to use some pressurized air on the ports of your monitor.

2) Check your monitors settings and check to see if there is an option relating to auto brightness. If your monitors support this, it can sometimes cause the monitors to fade due to faulty light sensors.

NOTE: This could also be a simple driver issue. Sometimes it pays to go and find the specific manufacturer drivers for your monitors rather than using the windows drivers that are installed by default.

Not had a chance to update this in awhile, but the problem is still happening.

I cleaned all the ports on the back of the computer, went through the monitor settings (why would one monitors settings affect both monitors?), tried removing the monitor display drivers to the default windows one, and then tried updating them to the newest samsung drivers one at a time... still same problem =/

I am sorely tempted to see if formatting and reinstalling windows will fix this problem, although if the problem is in one of the drivers for my hardware it will just repeat itself!

Hopefully you have some more ideas what might be causing this?

It could be a problem with your GPU since both monitors are connected to it. Even if it isn't, I would still suspect a hardware problem at this point.
