Is 256GB SSD overkill if I plan on having a second regular drive for my data. I only plan to put the OS and a few applications on it. Or, should I stick with a 128GB?

Solution
Go for 256GB SSD as it would give you headroom as well. You can easily put your some favorite games on it as well even if not now but in future. Keep your OS and apps and favorite games on it while keeping rest of the data on HDD.

My config is same usign 256GB SSD along with 4TB WD Black Caviar HDD. My favorite games are on SSD while other games are on HDD.

All depends on your use.
If you want games on it, the 256 is not too much.

For comparison, my 128GB drive with Win 8.1 and all applications apart from games is 50GB. My documents and downloads go to a different 128GB drive. My meager collection of Steam games is also around 50GB.

Currently, my drive is 60GB of OS + applications. I plan to use it as a gaming rig. However, I don't keep old games around. I just play them, remove them, and install new game.
