Hi,

I’m after some advice/opinions on a new build paradigm I’ve been toying with for a few years now. Recently as my family is beginning to really grow (wife, daughter and another on the way) it’s started to make more and more sense as all of us are very much into heavy IT use. We all enjoy games, my wife and I both have Eyefinity x3/4 setups on some good rigs. Both of us work from home quite a bit as well. My daughter is quite young still so is into smaller devices; tables and so on (touch screen) but keeps asking for me to build her a PC like Mummy & Daddy’s. So it’s the ideal time to seriously consider this:

My plan was to consolidate and centralize basically. I can obtain and have room for at least a 42U 19” rack case in the main office. I’m sure you can see where I’m going with this… x5 4/5U rack mount cases; 1 will be for the home server and the rest will be our PCs.

My only slight concern with doing this is KVMing over networks our multi-screen requirements. For now each of our displays utilize a combo of DVI & VGA outputs from 7850s. However future proofing is something I want to be conscientious about. I would ideally switch to NVIDIA, so considering something like the GTX 780 Ti that’s x4 DVI once you convert. Ultimately 6 displays per PC would be the goal + 7.1 sound. Anyone know of a KVM extender over Cat5/6 solution that makes this kind of thing possible? Without rearing a hole in the bank would be idea, remember I need like 3 of these things right now.

Thanks for your help!

After much research I have come to the conclusion that it's a pipe dream and KVMing 4k HD to that many synchronized displays is impossible with our current technology.

Numerous reasons including; the card will not be able to recognize the displays as being on native cable therefore won't have access to the EDID. Even if it were possible then there would be bandwidth issues over standard Cat6, likely resolvable by using fibre or Thunderbolt II. However there would also likely be synchronization issues due to the increased latency.
