Hi, I'm new to this forum and I'm sorry if I've posted this in the wrong place.

I need some advice on how to sort a wired connection for a few pieces of tech. At the moment, I have a Sky Hub in my home, which I believe is a wireless router. (I'm not entirely sure of the difference between a router and a modem) This is downstairs (where it needs to remain) and sits besides and connected to our home Sky Box via an Ethernet cable so that we can access 'catch up on demand'. This is a problem for me as I'm unable to connect my console and computer tower via a wired connection, and I do not wish to run them wireless, I have done in the past but overall prefer a wired connection for speed etc. I was wondering if anyone on this forum can help me out, for instance, advice on if I'd have to purchase a router or modem for upstairs, or any possible ways that I can have this sort of setup.

This is the Sky Hub which I currently have:

And this is the ideal setup which I'd like if possble:

If anyone could provide some info on this, I'd be very grateful. All the best.

A cat 5e would be sufficient. Don't buy the more expensive cat 6. You are just wasting your money. There are currently no home networking devices that will utilize the full speeds of a cat 6 cable.

So I'd need to run an Ethernet cable from the back of the Sky Hub, through the ceiling realistically, to the 5-port switch in the room above? That would work but are there no other alternatives to this? For instance, another potential modem or router (still don't understand the difference between the two), I'm a keen gamer so I could also do with the best connection possible and don't know whether that'd factor into this, or just any other ideas you could think of.

Thanks for the information though, that is one solution already.

In simple terms, a modem is what links your home to the internet. It modulates signal to encode and demodulates to decode transmitted information from your internet service provider. A router takes the signal from your modem and shares the connection between your devices, provides a wireless signal, acts as a security barrier, allows your devices to create a local area network to share files etc. Since you want a wired connection a switch would be your best bet. You can however, move your modem and router upstairs, and run an Ethernet cable from your router to your downstairs television if you need just one connection downstairs. This would eliminate the need to buy a switch.

I honestly don't think there is an alternative.

Thanks for your help Dizzy, you've really helped me out. I've got one more question though, I believe the 'Sky Hub' which I have is a wireless router, and that is all I have, do I therefore not have a modem? And the second alternative suggestion of having the router/modem upstairs would work better than the 5-port switch for me, although I'm not sure if having it plugged into a plain phone socket opposed to the master phone socket downstairs would make a difference, you got any idea about that?

I'm also considering changing my service provider as I have pretty terrible upload/download speeds with Sky, I know that'd definitely improve my connection but what about these netgear/tp link/etc high speed routers and modems, would they make any difference to me and could I have one alongside say a virgin media, or bt router for instance?

The Skyhub is a Modem/Router combination since you have no other devices before the sky hub. I don't think there would be a problem since DSL is not specific to a particular port in your home. There may be a DSL filter on your existing jack where your sky hub is plugged in. You can simply unplug that and move it to the upper location.

Yes a cable connection would provide you with better internet speeds than your current DSL service. You can add your own router to whatever service you get, but your ISP equipment will adequately work. There is no need to get another router if your ISP provides one. You would not notice any internet speed increase with a 3rd party router.

If you are getting a new service just have the installer wire all of your equipment.

Thats all I need to know on that matter, the last issue I have is that I need to purchase some new ethernet cables, primarily for the wired connection of a playstation 4 and a computer tower, been reading a few articles, would cat6 or 6a be better, you got any idea?

Glad you made a decision. Patch cable and Ethernet cables are essentially the same thing as you have stated. Patch cable was just a term used for shorter cables mostly used on patch panels.

Dizzy, sorry to be a pain in the bum asking you so many questions, my internet provider is Sky, as I mentioned above, would considering other types of router improve my internet connection? Currently, I've got the wireless Sky Hub SR101, its fine for now but I've been reading through the specs and realised it isn't a gigabit router, only supporting 10/100 I believe. I'm going to buy some Cat6 ethernet cables soon, would I be able to continue with my current internet provider, and get myself a different, more powerful router/modem?

Ideally I'd need something wireless for family connectivity to phones/ipad's etc, but I'd like to hook up my Ps4 and Computer via a wired connection with Cat6 ethernet cables as said, have you got any suggestions you could advise me with, or any specific modems or routers etc, I'd really appreciate it.

There is no need to buy another router. Your current skyhub does wireless and will handle wired connection to your PS4 and computer. Your internet speeds will not improve with a gigabit router. You internet speed is set by you internet service provider. With a gigabit router, you will only see an increase on the LAN side. If you are transferring a file from one computer to another the file transfer will be faster. If you insist on getting a gigabit router look at the ASUS RT-N56U or RT-N66U.
