The newer games are made for Amds so I would go Amd because the Xbox one and ps4 both use Amd processors and such.

go 770 not as much power, heat and it works very well. The whole mantle thing has shown some improvement in amd but not enough for me to just shoot for amd. If you can get the 780 it will destroy all those cards and the 290.

so as far as vram 3 gbs is enough but if you want "future proof" go 4gb since it seems youre going to try to keep this card for a while.

When it comes to graphic cards you have to ask yourself what features you will need. The cards you have cheked are high class so if that is your budget you can consider both Gigabyte 280x OC or for exaple the Gtx 770 . AMD features are Mantle and crossfire. Nvidia features 3D vision Gamestream and SLI. Mantle improves the fps by reducing the power needed by the processor.BF4 has it already and games in the future will have it. Corossfire and SLI are the ability to use 2 or more cards togather on 2 or 3 monitors so SLI is slightly better becouse you can play on 3 monitors with 3D if you so desire.
Gamestream is for you to stream to a Nvidia Shield if you have one.But steam made the In-home streaming and it will work even better nomatter what card you use.So it really comes down to what you want to do - 3d gaming ,maybe you want to have beter fps on future games. With the 280x you can do cryptocoin mining which can be profitable so if i had the money right now i will probably go with it. So watch some game benchmarking and see which card gets higher framerates in the games you play. If you get around 60 to 80 fps on some games that means you will be futureproofed to play next year games on maybe 30 to 40 fps(or maybe 20 to 30 who knows).

Thank you all for your help its much appreciated, as I say I'm new to PC gaming so I wanted to get a decent GPU for a decent price but still be able to play most games & future games on ultra/high settings, as I have had to lower my budget a bit I am now thinking of just getting the gtx 770, as I will only be playing on a single 23'' 1920x1080 Monitor, also thinking if I wanted to add more performance in the future I can always SLI if I went down the Nvidia route if I'm correct, but is it worth the £250 price range ?
