Hello everyone, i recently bought this antenna:
http://www.tp-link.us/products/details/?categoryid=2474&model=TL-ANT2424B#spec
got it on my roof and connected to my computer through this :
http://www.tp-link.us/products/details/?categoryid=&model=TL-WN951N

Now, it seems that it doesn't work, i tried rotating the antenna and finding any kind of signal but nothing, it's not working at all. i think i'm missing something, maybe some other device?

I live in an isolated place but there are houses around i'm sure they have internet, so at least some protected connections should show up.

Thank you for your time.

so i do need another device, i thought i had to connect the cable from the antenna directly to the pc.
this antenna has a range of 50km more or less and i live on 2nd floor , it won't be hard to catch the signal as soon as i get it to work.

It might have that range but the wireless router does not with the stock antennas. The signal from the router does not go out infinitely it drops off pretty quick and it has to go through walls. now if you hooked up that antenna to the router then it might get to you. My set up is my yagi is outside on a pole pointed at my in laws house I got about 25 feet of cable that runs into the house connected to the back of the router.

Likely it is not possible.

First how did you manage to hook that antenna to your PC. Unless you use high quality microwave cable you can easily lose more signal that the antenna adds. Cost wise you are much better off using outdoor bridge equipment connected directly to the antenna. Look at Ubiquiti for samples.

Still that is not your major problem. You need clear line of site and you have to avoid the ground eating your signal as the beam spreads out. Part of the issue with clear line of site is at 18m the curve of the earth will have a impact. Next because of the rate of beam spread at that distance you need to be up very high.

The way to compute this is with what is called a fresnel calculator...

This shows you will need at least 100ft towers on each end maybe even higher if there building or other tall obstructions in the path.

My problem isn't catching the signal, my question was what else do i need.
I got the antenna that i linked in the 1st post, how do i get it to work? i bought the network card that i also linked and i thought the antenna would connect to it with a cable but it seems it isn't working, so it looks like i got something wrong, do i need a router or access point like this? http://www.tp-link.com/lk/products/details/?model=TL-WR841ND , and if yes how does it work? i connect the antenna to this AP and then then to the computer through ethernet cable?

This is a link another poster realbeast commonly posts to show how this is done.

As you can see this solution assumes you mount the electronics outside and use ethernet cable to make it work. This is really the only way to go long distances. Ubiquiti airgrid are normally what I recommend but you could mount what are called "bullet" from ubiquiti to your current antenna to get similar device.

If you have the proper cable you can directly hook that antenna to your card. The key is having the proper cable, you can not just use tv coax with adapters.

If the location you wanted to connect to was close say maybe 500ft it might work. People have done this to steal internet from a restaurant in the past. The problem is when you start to go any distance you need directional antenna on both ends.

A AP does not buy you much on your end. It would be the far end that has the internet that you would want to connect a big antenna to the internet router.

well i think i got the correct cable since i got it from tplink as well, this one http://www.tp-link.com/en/products/details/?model=TL-ANT24PT
i just cant understand why it doesn't work when i plug it in my card, it should at least see few signals, there are houses around me and even protected signals should show up, plus i live 10km from Rome, it should show up even more signals when i point it to the city.

Maybe try it on a different antenna port on the card. Going back and looking at this card it only can run 300m which means it is using 2x2 mimo. It should only need 2 antenna but it has three and then why would they not support 3x3 mimo to get 450m. Maybe there is some strange restriction on the antennas.

You are correct you should see something if they are close enough. All you would have to do is put a phone in hotspot mode to get a test signal.

You will never get a signal from 10k without direction equipment on both ends and large towers. You need both ends more than 50ft from the ground. Using directional on one end only you will be very lucky to get 500 meters.
