Hello all,

I have been having a weird issue with my internet connection dropping for a couple months now.

What I have noticed:
It does not matter if I am wireless or wired.
When running windows diagnostics it always pulls up the same error message "The DNS server is not responding".
I am usually able to resolve the issue by unplugging my ethernet cable and giving it 30 seconds before plugging it back in, however the connection may drop in a couple of minutes.
Sometimes windows will reset the ethernet port which will fix the issue, however this does not guarantee a stable connection either.
I initially thought it was my ISP but after talking to my roommates it appears that I am the only person in the house experiencing this problem.

What I have done:
I'm not an expert on networking but I am not clueless either. I have changed some settings on both the router and computer.
I left the ISP set to dynamic for both the router and computer.
For DNS servers I use Comcast's 75.75.75.75 and 75.75.76.76 which are generally the best in the area. I have also tried googles 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.
I changed the MAC address on the router to match my computer.
I turned IPv6 off for my computer.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My specs:

HP Pavilion dv6z Quad Edition

Netgear WRN1000v2 router

Comcast Modem

Since I've had this computer I've gone through Windows 7, 8 and now 8.1, and the issue persists, so I don't think it's to do with the OS.

Also, while it could well be the antivirus, I was using Windows Defender up until a few weeks ago but I've since installed Avast with no change.

With regards to the router, I got mine through Sky (I live in the UK), and none of my other machines have any problems connecting to the internet, so I don't think it's that either.

I have pondered myself over whether it could be my motherboard, although I really hope it's not that....

I looked at your post. What kind of computer do you have? Also what kind of antivirus are you running? We do have a pretty similar situation.

I feel like it could be one of three things.

1.) It could be the computer? Although my problem affects both my wireless and ethernet cards and I think the next common connection would be the motherboard. Maybe Windows? I am running windows 7.
2.) It could be antivirus settings that interfere with the connection which might explain why it seems like the connection will randomly drop. I am using Kaspersky Internet Security 2014.
3.) Maybe it is just my computer having a hard time communicating with the router? I got my router through Comcast so we could have a similar router. I am going to drop by Comcast Monday morning and see if I can get a newer router seeing as the model I currently have isn't the latest they offer.

If we have something in common we may be able to help each other out.
