Overclocking tips for beginner?

I have an i7 4770k with a H100 and want to try overclocking, something I've never done before.

Any recommendations on what to aim for with my CPU cooler?

I know every chip is different, but just looking for a moderate overclock or what my hardware could handle. A ball park figure would be fantastic.

Research (google) for "Safe Overclocks" or something along those lines (for the processor you have) and then start fiddling with bclk and voltages.

What kind of cooler do you have? Because OC'ing with the stock Intel cooler is generally a bad idea.

OC'ing is very random. Some chips are made to OC easily and others just don't seem to want to. Your OC will depend a lot on the quality of your chip.

BTW, don't adjust Bclk (Base Clock) as recommended above. Just leave it at 100.

Just because you CHOOSE not to adjust the bclk, doesn't mean others don't. Here is an paragraph from an i7-4770K Over clockers guide:

" Increase either the multiplier or the BCLK, and the processor’s clock speed will ultimately increase as well. Because K-SKUs are unlocked, you can freely change the multipliers and set the BCLK to different ratios, or straps, of 100MHz, 125MHz, 167MHz, and 250MHz. You can then tweak the actual BCLK in small increments as well, as long as you’re using an overclocker-friendly motherboard like my Gigabyte Z87-UD3H. "

If you are going to recommend something to someone, then do so. But don't discount someone elses method if you choose not to use that method.

The title of the thread is "Overclocking tips for a beginner", and for that purpose, I don't believe that OC'ing Bclk is a good idea. OC'ing Bclk will also OC the PCIe bus, the memory, the USB ports and everything else in the MB. Max safe gain is only 3-5% and the risk of problems with the aforementioned items is not worth it, especially for a "Beginner".
