I was looking to build a new computer to play Elder Scrolls online and also to step up my Protools rig. So a gaming/audio recording box. Here's what I put together so far..

Can anyone offer me some suggestions on how I can change this to make it a bit more affordable, if not more efficient? I'm wondering if the graphics card is too expensive?

Okay there are major problems with your build.

You really want a soundcard? I think you can safely exclude that first of all. It is not necessary to purchase a separate soundcard unless you are an audiophile.

Then again your GPU is outdated now. in the same range you should go for r9 270x or r9 270 which will be slightly better than 7870.

Your PSU is not good enough to support your current GPU anyways and you need to change that as well.

I wonder why you are choosing Ivy Bridge over the Newer Haswell? Any particular reason?

Ideally , if you give a budget, I could restructure your build for you into something affordable and nice.

The build looks very nice. I do not see much that can be changed.
You can use i5-3350P if you do not plan overclocking. The case will just fit the 212 :) (I had some doubts there).
The selected video is good, do not touch it.
PSU is on the weak side, It may work but not guaranteed. Better get 550-600W Corsair.

I was thinking around 800-900 in total. I don't know much about hardware except for in a very superficial way. That's why I'm asking professionals like you!! :)

The system is planned for audio editing also - hence the sound components. I do not have knowledge there so better ask someone with experience in Pro tools.
The differences between IB and Haswell are small, and 270x is basically renamed 7870 with minor clock boost.
You can use the newer variant but the gains will not be significant.
The build is really OK as it is (except the PSU).

I'll grant you that the soundcard is unnecessary, upon further reflection. Since I do have external sound gear. Since most of my music is dithered, compressed, and lossy it's even more superfluous. I thought the only significant advantage of the haswell is that it requires less power? They are the same size and are about equivalent in performance, no?

I made some builds for you.. The first two are little out of your range, but they are extremely good for gaming.

The next two use AMD core architecture and would be extremely good at gaming and would be within your range too. So that's something to thnk bout.

Also if you really wanted to save some cash, then you could go for even a lower architecture with minimum loss of performance in GPU intensive games. like this...

I think with everything to buy.. These are the builds you are looking at.

I wouldn't recommend you to compromise on the r9 270 Graphics Card...

So if you really have to compromise, you could on the HDD and stuff like that.
