I recently purcahsed a N300 WiFi USB Adapter for an older Compaq Presario computer running Windows XP Home Edition (I think - I am not really a PC person). I installed the software, inserted the USB stick, and everything was OK. When I go back to use the computer - it was still turned on and 'sleeping' - there is no internet connection. There is no icon for the USB in the doc, and when I tried launching the software it immediately quits. I went through the process again, removing and reinstalling the software. Everything was working. Then again when I returned to use the computer at a later time the same thing occurred though this time there seems to be no sign of the software on the computer. What's up with that?

On a related note, though I understand this is not the appropriate thread for the question, is there anything I can do with this PC to make it any faster (i.e. usable). According to the case it has a

3400+ AMD Athlon 64 Processor
512 MB memory (which may have been upgraded - I don't have that computer turned on right now).
