It seems that I might be stuck with a server purchased about two years ago since no one is willing to give me a fair price for it. Since then, I have built another server that is more suitable to my needs therefore I'm kinda scratching my head at the moment as to what to do with this thing.
My question is, what are some good uses for this piece of hardware? Here are the specs taken from the craigslist listing:
1 - HP PROLIANT ML350 G5 SERVER 2x INTEL XEON QUAD CORE 3.00GHz, 12MB Cache, 1333 FSB, 64bit Instruction Set
16GB Fully Buffered ECC Memory - Upgradeable to 32GB
1 - New HP 3.5" SATA SAS FC Tray Caddy
1 - New HP 2.5" SATA SAS FC Tray Caddy
2 - SATA PCIe x1, 4 port, SATA 6GB, Non-RAID with Low Profile Bracket
4 - Thermaltake 3.5" HDD Converter for SSD/2.5"
7 - SATA 6GB/S Cables
This server has built in iLO (Integrated Lights Out), dual PSUs, and an updated BIOS.
The ideas I have are to run Security Onion or vSphere (as a learning tool), or something like that. My problem is that network sensors in my home do not need all that horsepower but i can see that experimenting with vSphere might.
Any thoughts?
Thanks for the help.
