Noob question: I have a Dell PowerVault 3200 with an empty riser that has an open PCI express G3 X8 slot. I want to install an LSI SAS 9212-4i4e card with PCIe2 X8 connector. The card and slot fit properly during a no-power test but the card's smaller pin count leaves many pins in the slot unconnected. Is this a safe way to install the card or is it necessary to find a different riser that matches the card exactly?

Thanks @unknownofprob. The more I looked at it the more it made sense to get a proper fitting riser.

Quick follow-up: A Dell technician confirmed that the card can be used the existing slot. The SAS card is now installed in the riser and shows as OK in Device manager.
