Hi. New here. I'll be as simple as i can. Apologies if this thread is in the wrong area

DVD drive i have: MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ8D1
Laptop: Lenovo Ideapad Z580. Windows 8.1, 64-bit

>Had the laptop for about 14 months. Never had a problem with blank discs before.
>Burnt a lot of media in that time.

>When i insert a blank DVD it just makes a funny noise, like its trying to load it
>Tried 3 different types of blank DVDs
>DVDs with media already on can be played perfectly
>Blank CDs are recognized, got no CDs with media on so cant try that.
>Correct driver installed. Windows says there is no problem with it.. Don't get any errors. (wish i did so i could Google the error code)

Here's something strange....Due to my frustration, i went out and bought i external DVD writer, and i connected it to my laptop, inserted a blank DVD, and the EXACT same thing happened, the brand new DVD writer wouldn't recognize the blank DVD. This leads my to believe the problem is in the laptop and the DVD drive in my laptop is fine.

More about : dvd drive reading blank discs reads discs media reads blank cds

Try this from Microsoft
http://support.microsoft.com/mats/cd_dvd_drive_problems...

If that doesn't work try cleaning the drives lens.
try uninstalling recently installed programs

Lastly try the upper/lower filters registry edit
Spoiler
Method 2

You may also follow these steps & check if the issue reoccurs:

Important: This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry click on the following article. To view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: 322756 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756/) How to back up and restore the registry in Windows.

a. Click Start, type ‘regedit’ in the Start Search box, and then click regedit in the Programs list.

Note: If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.

b. Locate, and then click the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Caution: There can be many instances of the registry subkey that is mentioned in step 2. You must make sure that you are in the appropriate registry subkey before modifying the UpperFilters and the LowerFilters values. To verify that you are in the appropriate registry subkey, make sure that the Default data value is DVD/CD-ROM and the Class data value is CDROM.

c. In the right pane, if you have UpperFilters, right-click UpperFilters, and then click Delete.

d. Click Yes to confirm the removal of the UpperFilters registry entry.

e. In the right pane, if you have LowerFilters, right-click LowerFilters, and then click Delete.

f. Click Yes to confirm the removal of the LowerFilters registry entry.

g. Exit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.

Hi, sorry for the late reply. Been away. Neither of your solutions worked. The default data value didn't have a name so i changed it to DVD/CD-ROM but that didn't help. I've just tried a blank CD and it worked, i also put in a DVD with a film on and that worked. Its just blank DVDs. I would screen shot it but i don't know if i can post pics here.

There was no upper or lower values to delete.

I couldn't run the microsoft "fix it" program, said my system wasn't supported for it.

When i click on the reg you told me to click on it has 7 sub folders. I will name them in order from 1-7......0000, 0001, 0002, 0003, 0004, Configuration, Properties. (it wont let me open properties though)

It makes no sense. I've been using blank DVDs since i bought the laptop

Its strange the exact same thing is happening to my brand new external DVD writer as well

Apparently if you don't follow proper "safe" eject procedures when using USB flash drives and just pull then out it can cause weird glitches with DVD burners. This might sound weird but try putting in a usb flash drive and then "eject" it properly. It may restore functionality to your dvd burner. Hope this helps.
