I soon will be replacing my mother board from a gigabyte 970a-d3 to a asus sabertooth 990fx chipset. I was wondering if i would HAVE to reinstall windows 7. Or more specifically just keep everything on my HDD

Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. And sometimes it works, partially.

I thought no matter what if the chipset is different you had to install it? Also how can you tell if its the retail or OEM, im guessing i have the retail

Dear,

I switched from H87 to Z87 chipsets and did not install Windows. This may be partly due to 87 series. But My Windows was effective as well when I switched from 77 chipset to 87 chipset. Anyhow, it may be all random. If you've purchased complete system under one brand like Dell or HP then it will be OEM version otherwise retail version is that which is shipped independent of any OEM brand system or the one which you directly buy from Microsoft or online stores
