Installed some windows updates during a shutdown. When I rebooted it needed to do some final installations, so I walked away. When I came back, it said "error loading operating system". I tried to get into repair/recovery using my Vista disc. When I do, it goes thru the "windows is loading files" stage, proceeds to these standard green loading bar, and after about 15 seconds the screen goes blank. A minute later, the cd drive stops spinning. I've let it sit for hours at this stage with no results. I borrowed another disc from someone, with the same results.

Any thoughts?

May be a coincidental hardware failure that occurred during the update process. Please provide the specs for this system (make/model of computer or a complete listing of system components).

It's a dell. I don't have all the specs handy atm. I started running some diagnostics thru the bios and received error 2000-0142 which Google tells me is a hard drive failure. Seems like a weird coincidence, but I'm going to try swapping in a new hard drive after work to see if I can load a clean install on to that drive.

Hoping I can get my files off bad one via a hard drive enclosure.

It does happen from time to time. Good luck on the HDD swap.
