Realtek HD Drivers Break Windows Audio

Hi all, I am normally quite good with computers, but I am having some serious issues with Windows Audio Service. I just bought a new motherboard (MSI z87M).
I did a clean install of windows, followed by all the drivers for my hardware. Shortly after, I realized that all audio was hopelessly broken. The speaker icon would show a red 'X' and sound would not work. Clicking this would bring up the Windows troubleshooting assistant, which would 'fix' the problem by starting the windows audio service, which hadn't been running. The sound icon would go back to normal, but still no audio, and clicking on the icon would crash the windows audio service again. This would continue in an endless loop until I realized that something must be broken. (which was quite some time..)
I tried every fix I could think of, and after 4 complete windows reinstalls, I've narrowed it down: the audio works until I install the Realtek HD drivers included on the motherboard's driver disc, after which everything basically commits suicide (the Event Log/Viewer service also started repeatedly crashing).
What can I do, and what could possibly be causing this? Could the motherboard have a faulty sound card? Is my windows disc bad?
I'd like to use the features the soundcard provides, but right now the only way to keep audio working is to never install the drivers.
Any suggestions? I'd really appreciate it.

Installed the latest drivers. Sound actually works over HDMI. But the Audio Service does not start with windows, and clicking the sound icon still causes the service to crash.
Then, when an analog audio device is plugged in, sound stops working altogether. The audio service crashes shortly after being restarted every time. And unplugging the analog device often causes windows to bluescreen/reboot!
Luckily I was cautious enough to create a restore point before installing the drivers. I have reverted back to this restore point, and audio works again, but now all output is SUPER weak! Even at max volume, it's hard to hear anything through my headphones. This is maddening!
I guess I should write MSI a strongly-worded letter...

Might be a BIOS bug, they had problems with their NIC drivers on initial release also, which they fixed w/ a BIOS update, or might be the mobo itself, might also check on front panel connectors, might have a regular audio connection as well as one for HD that plugs into the mobo, make sure using the HD

I'm having the exact same issue with the same motherboard. I contacted MSI (alexanderhernandez@msi.com) and they suggested using an older driver which I downloaded from realtek; did not work. Their response was it's a motherboard issue because "No users have reported an issue with the drivers online."

I've been building computers for 25yrs as a hobby (3-4/yr is typical) and have my undergraduate degree in Computer Engineering. So it's not a newbie issue.

That's the same response they gave back when the P67s were reissued, and it was that they were using overly tight DRAM sockets, knew about it and kept blowing people off "we haven't heard of that" was their stock response, I got it a half dozen times, as did some clients, and numerous other builders I network with.

The same problem with MSI Z87G43 here. It works with windows default driver but the sound quality is low. There has to be a way to work with its original driver(sounds funny). Otherwise it's a serious defect of this mobo.

Follow these steps:
1.Uninstall realtek audio driver
2.Restart
3.Go to system devices and unistall high definition audio device
4.Install realtek audio driver
5.Restart

It must have been a conflict between the drivers, now it's ok.

Yes i have the Z87M and this worked.
I remember my sound being normal, then today i plugged in my mic to the headset then plugged the headset one in properly and the sound went low i heard it just as i p[lugged it in.
I had just turned off the thing that asked me what i plugged into a port thingy, might be the mic plugging in did something.

Anyhoot.

I searched this and all back to normal... TY :D

I follow everything stated except for #3. What does this mean? Does it mean to open Control Panel>Device Manager>System Devices?

Is this referring to High Definition Audio Controller, because I don't have a High Definition Audio Device listed?

If you have High Definition Audio Controller" in device manager then uninstall it.
If you DON'T have "High Definition Audio Controller" in your device manager go and instal it from the MSI website.
