I am fool - I bought 8gb of RAM (8GB PC2-6400 240 PIN DDR2 800MHZ ECC Reg 2X4GB SERVER MEMORY) for a server I am trying to build out of an old mobo (M4A78L-M LE) mistakenly thinking it would support it.

Question is : Which mobo could I get to support the RAM ?

I was not defo keeping the board - and even have another use for it.
Ideally the server would be AM3 - as then I can reuse my phenom 9500 - but would consider a mobo & cpu combo.
Cheapness, while not key, is a consideration.

The board I have supports DDR2 - it even supports ECC, just not registered buffered - only unbuffered and only up to 2048mb modules - not the 4096MB ones I have.

CPU upgrade is not a priority atm - I would rather keep the old Phenom for now - but have options for later upgrade.

If I can't get a mobo that will support both the memory and CPU I have then I have no preference for CPU,

Thanks for your input.

On your recommendation I just had a look at the supported RAM (http://www.asrock.com/mb/memory/A785GM-LE128M.pdf) and I think it’s the same problem as the mobo I have.
On the surface it looks good – but dig in and it doesn’t do Registered Buffered ECC DRAM in 4096MB modules.

In a link from Crucial (http://www.misco.co.uk/Product/162008/Crucial-8GB-4GB-X-2-Kit-PC2-6400-DDR2-Fully-Buffered-ECC-RAM) for similar DRAM it lists the mobos supported as

Intel D5400XS
Tyan S5393 Tempest i5400PL
ASUS Z7S WS
Supermicro SUPER X7DWT-INF+
Tyan S5397 Tempest i5400PW

I am off to see if I can find and afford any of these – remembering I have to find a CPU too.

Any opinions of those or other suggestions?
