Can't decide on CPU

Last year I purchased an XFX Double D R7 260X 2GB DDR5. Made a huge difference on my current system but now it is time to have a little fun. I also replaced the power supply so it is large and no issue.

I want to build a system around this card since I already have it. I am working to stay under $500. RAM prices are killing me.

I got there with the A-10 but now I am hearing I should go with the FX but there are cooling issues requiring larger cooling systems ending up with higher costs.

I am landing on the FX 8320, but is this worth the trouble, I can go the 6300 for $30 less and spend more on cooling.

Obviously case and mobo are about the same cost and RAM I am going with 16 GB to start.

Solution
If you live near a microcenter, they have, or they had the 8320 on sale for $99 instore.

If you havea video card, don't bother with the A10. I know you can crossfire them, but the CPU is still going to cripple over the FX and for about the same price.

Guess it depends, if you can go hit a micorcenter and get a $99 8320, that will determine the rest of your parts. lol. I wouldn't go 16gb right now, I would go 8gb and put the rest of your money on a good board or board and cooler. the 8320 will overclock to 4ghz no problem with a $30 hyper evo, maybe 4.2 or so.

16 GB would be overkill if it is gaming thats all that you are building a system for.
Between the 8320 and the 6300, you won't see almost any difference gaming at the best resolution you can drive your games with that card...say 1080p.

If you do not plan to OC at the moment, the stock cooler will do it's job rather well.

The GPU is all I really have in hand right now. The purpose is for a 17 year old going to college in a year. Some gaming, some office work, some communications, watches his TV through this system (Netflix, HBO Go, DirecTV). That drove the graphics card decision. Likely never a high powered gaming system but it could be once he gets to college.

I am sure we will start having some fun with OCing. This is for a 17 year old that just started learning. I have not bilt a system in 5 years. The graphics card was purchased specifically for 1080p played on a 42". This will be a college system. Gaming some but all around application. I could save if I go 6300 no doubt. I want to build to last for 4-5 years. If the 8 core is that much better all around I can do the $40 extra.

I looked that way but pricing kind of sent me away. Plus, we do want the speed, bragging if nothing else. 4 GHz has been the goal for a new system. Currently working with 3.4 GHz but limited board capabilities. HP box so mini tower, little expansion and can't open the BIOS (no BIOS available, has been deleted) for any overclocking. If an i5 is the way to go I am all ears. Especially if we are talking stability when OC or a newly found IT interested kid gets into it.

I have looked this direction. Question is what true difference would we see over a 5 year period when the price break is only $30?

8 weaker cores and a lower clock speed vs 6 stronger cores and a higher clock speed.
Also price difference, and the fx6xxx uses less power than the 8xxx series, your shot man.
Hope it helped!

Where do you get weaker cores? They are both Piledriver series chips.

6350 has a 125w TDP, 8320 has a 125w TDP, same power requirements.

8320 turbo cores to 4.0ghz, 6350 to 4.2ghz, not a big difference there.

8320 will overclock to 6350 speeds without any voltage increase. In fact I can hit 3.9v and undervolt, therefore using less power.

And if you want to go apple for apple, the 6300 vs the 8320, the 8320 wins in every benchmark. http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/699?vs=698

Microcenter has the 8320 on sale for $99 instore vs $130 for the 6350.

Your turn.

Alright.
TDP =/= Power consumption. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermal_Design_Power
The FX6300, at stock speeds, uses about 200 watts at max load. the 8320 uses 250~ watts.
Also, adding more cores hurts the singlethreaded performance. Sure, if the 8320 is cheaper than the 6300, then get the 8320.. But if not, get the 6350 and a cooler for it.

Thanks to everyone. Through this conversation I have gone with the FX 8320 and plan to OC. If the information I have right now is correct the best board for this is 970 Extreme4 Socket AM3+, Likely has more than I need but I like to have options. I need to go after cooling now and a case.
