Hello there new poster long time reader, I have recently been playing the beta of a new game wildstar and yes I know it is a beta and not optimized yet but my friends are getting upwards of 100 fps with a gtx 660. So I recently upgraded from my 6770 to a GTX 660 but I still get 25 fps. I feel like I should of gotten some sort of increase atleast. Everything I have looked up says that a 3.0 PCI Express graphics card will work in a 2.1 PCI Express slot which is what my mothers board has so I am confused please help me understand or fix. Thank you for your time.
Specs

Asus M5A97 motherboard with 2.1 pci express
AMD X4 965 Black edition OCed to 4.0 Ghz
GTX 660
8gb 1333 RAM

Solution
most of the steam early access games are cpu reliant, not so much gpu reliant. you should have seen at least some fps increase though, so make sure
1. up to date drivers
2. capable psu, as the 660 uses more power than your 6770
3. uninstall amd drivers AFTER you get the newest nvidia drivers

:heink:

It isn't because of his CPU unless it is overheating/throttling. It is a quad-core @ 4.0GHz

It is a quad core, but still roughly equivalent to the current gen i3's. In cpu heavy games, it will be holding the system back; most of the beta early access games on steam (dayz, 7 days to die, a few of the others) are all fairly cpu reliant due to being unfinished and unoptimized games.

Thank you for your quick replies.
1. I have the most updated nvdia drivers
2. I just ordered a new PSU as I thought that may be the problem because it is old but wasn't sure. Would that really cause it to run the video card just not at full performance?
3. and I have uninstalled the amd drivers.

Thank you

Well aside from upgrading processors and hopefully the new psu helps
1. fresh install windows
2. defrag hard drives
3. turn off v-sync in some games
4. take your side panel off, the cpu overheating is very likely with a more powerful and hotter card in your system

Ok thank you very much. I honestly am not the smartest obviously but it seems like a psu would either power the graphics card or it wouldn't not anything in between. Does it really run the card at less speed and quality?

intel's new I series came out in nov. 2008 and was leaps and bounds ahead of amd, even the X4 965 Black edition that came out almost a year after intels release, Aug 2009. The X4 965 is more on par with intels core 2 duo.

What are the system specs of your friends computers that you're trying to compare to? Without knowing that I would still have to say that the X4 is your bottleneck since your playing a beta game that is not optimized at all and is most likely only running on one core. another way to check is to run a few free benchmark programs between the systems and compare scores, don't look at the end score but each score that add's up to the big one. A lot of them will give cpu and gpu scores.

Ya my friend has a better cpu by a lot he has a i7 4820 and a GTX 660. But was just wondering for fps why I received no increase in frames by upgrading to the 660 from the 6770. I know he will get more because of the processor but he is also running 3.7Ghz quad core and I am up to 4Ghz on a quad core and I know that the speed is not everything but I feel like it should be some what close.

Ok thank you very much for your help. One last question do you think it would be best to buy new mobo and cpu being intel or just upgrade my current processor say to the FX-8350 8 core 4Ghz? It is cheaper doing so but just wondering performance wise compared to say the 3570k.

You'd still need a new motherboard for the 8350 unless for some reason you had bought an am3+ (the + is important) motherboard, whereas the typical motherboard for your current processor is am3 (there are more pins on the am3+ cpu's and so they wont work in a regular am3 motherboard).

performance wise it is pretty similar, but in cpu heavy games the intel side still wins, but of course, this they do cost slightly more

Ok, then you could, but you may be limited in overclocking the am3+ depending on what variant (think 990 something or other labeling is needed for full overclocking, but i think 970 works fine too, i don't know as much about the different types of amd motherboards as much as i do intel)

Im sure this is it.
I think your graphic card hasnt been inserted properly and thats why your not able to use it. Bcos 25 fps is something you would get from the integrated graphics of your cpu. And I'm presuming that you removed your old card before you put in your new one (I know it sounds stupid, but some people...)

I have re installed it into both pci express slot twice each now so I am pretty positive that it is installed all the way as I have done a few video cards myself as well but I will double check. Honestly to me it seems something isnt right with the card tho but i do have the newest drivers as well. I should also note that even on league of legends im running at like 55 fps i feel like that is sad for this setup i have
