A PC that was off duty for half a year was switched on and Windows 7 updated. Result: a fireworks of BSOD and Q-Codes. Rather than fiddling around, I cleaned the PC, checked for loose cables, updated the BIOS, re-installed Windows 7 from the original DVD with formatting the SSD, re-installed the drivers from the original ASUS DVD, got the PC running, updated Windows, updated drivers - the PC worked like it was first built in January 2012.

But after two days uptime, the PC is dead again. While it was on, everything worked fine: restart, hibernate, sleep, wake on LAN. This is exactly what I did, in that order, before it died:

    shut down
detached monitor, ethernet, mouse and keyboard
    switched off PSU
    detached power cable
screwed back on the side of the case
carefully carried the PC back to its former place
    attached power cable
    switched on PSU
attached monitor, ethernet, mouse and keyboard
    pressed "on" button on PC

Result: black screen, no POST, VGA_LED constantly lit, Q-Code 9A. When switched off by pressing the power button for four seconds, both USB keyboard LEDs remain lit. Now mostly Q-Code 9A (USB initialisation started), sometimes 0E (microcode not found). No change when monitor, ethernet, mouse and keyboard are connected or not. Same result. Occasionally, when using the reset button, I got Q-Code B2 (legacy option ROM initialisation) as an "alternative" with a blinking cursor top left, but practically 9A all the time. I tested the PSU, the memory, the graphics card in another PC - they worked. I swapped in a HDD with OS on it - 9A. I swapped memory between slots, started with USB devices connected and without - 9A. Tried a bootable USB-stick - 9A.

What is going on? I am very puzzled. Obviously, the shutting down, switching off and unplugging of the power cord did something. What can I do now?

@Ahmadjon Thanks for your reply. I finally found a RAM DIMM from another PC which I fitted like so: | void | void | void | void | CPU | void | 4GB | void | void | With that, I get to the ASUS EZ-Mode BIOS setup screen again, select the SSD, and boot.

But now: what to do? Should I go to the Kingston website and select new 4x4GB or 2x8GB memory from their list pertaining to the ASUS P9X79, order and fit that? ASUS' own RAM QVL is still from 2011. Or - is there something else apart from getting new RAM I should try first?

What I also don't understand is that the VGA_LED lights up and 9A shows some USB status - rather, with after two years now faulty RAM, I would expect the DRAM_LED to light up? Very confusing for non-technical users, these motherboards.

Rastafari memory arrived this morning. I inserted it in the recommended DIMM-slots and started the PC without any issues - of course without ASUS' Optimal mode selected in the EZ-Setup screen for the time being (later, I want to run it at Optimal mode 3.8GHz although it would of course be nice to get the 4.2GHz back it was running on for nearly two years 24/7 (I do light simulations).

It is now running another round of prime95 with the temperature logged. Let's see what happens this time...

Well, prime95 still soldiered on all day. So now, I try replicating the previous fail: 1. shut down 2. switch off the PSU 3. disconnect the power cord...

...which all worked. So, it was the RAM or the DIMM slots on the fatherboard. But, still - how can RAM go bad by just switching a PC off for six months? I have never read anything regarding that.

Yeah good to see that you found the root cause! Good luck :)
