Hi, I'm pretty green when it comes to building PC's and recently I've been keen on building a budget gaming rig! I recently came into the possession of a GA-970A-DS3 mobo which supports FX series processors and 970 chipsets (great!!). I'm pretty dedicated on getting the FX6300 but noticed before ordering that my mobo rev which is 1.1 doesn't come with the 'F6' BIOS update pre installed but instead comes with 'F3'...My question really boils down to - would I be able to run the FX 6300 on my current motherboard rev? I know I could flash the BIOS to 'F6' but I'd prefer to just be able to do everything out of the box ...

Yea, it should be compatible with it right out of the box (It says so right on Gigabyte's website. Doing a BIOS update won't be very hard at all.

When you first boot your system, you are presented with a Power On Self Test or POST screen. Somewhere on this screen should tell you what version of BIOS you are currently running. If that states version F3, F4, or later, you have nothing to worry about.

If it states version F1 or F2, you will need to download the updated BIOS version from Gigabyte's web site. Included should be instructions for updating your BIOS. FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS TO THE LETTER!. Failure to do so could result in bricking your computer. The instructions should be easy enough to follow, but if you have any questions about it (before actually applying them), ask someone!

I just got this motherboard and cpu in a job lot from ebay, 'parts not working'- and i'm not very familiar with AMD cpus, always been an Intel man....but here's the problem with it....when it's all connected up it immediately fires up, on/ off switch doesn't 'work', it's constantly on no output from the video...physically checked the board and no obvious signs of damage...

now after reading this thread I'm wondering if this is what might happen if that cpu was installed without the BIOS update. motherboard version is 1.1

i was expecting it either to be cpu or mummyboard faulty, unlikely to be both....anybody got any ideas?

just been reading on UEFI as well.....could even be that? i only have XP and ubuntu flavours, no interest in windows 7- so if the bios has been set to that.....could it be causing this problem, at least partially?
