I'm going with an APU build for a family member. They don't do gaming, mostly just web browsing and Facebook games. They typically keep a few tabs open while browsing (like on eBay) and right now with a cheap laptop (2GB RAM and an Atom CPU @ 1.66GHz) their Outlook inbox page lags.
It's a budget build, so would prefer to do 4GB if I can get by with it, but should I go up to 8GB? I'm looking at some G.Skill 4GB 1600 right now. I figure 4GB would be enough as my general use PC has that amount, but mine isn't an APU build and so not sure if I should give it more or not.
4Gb will be fine. In fact for light usage I've found very littel difference between 2 and 4Gb with Windows 7 64 bit.
Edit: the lag almost certainly caused by the Atom processor, it's very, very slow.
Thanks. That's what I figured, that the CPU was the major issue. I've just always dealt with a CPU + dedicated GPU so wasn't sure if it would matter much. I know memory speed does. Just wanted an extra opinion before I pulled the trigger on the memory.
At least the motherboard does have four slots, so although it wouldn't be ideal, I could add in another two 2GB modules if she needs it in the future.
