Hi,
I'm doing my first pc build, and i would like to get windows 7 for the pc. I have windows 7 on my old pc, do you guys know if their is a way to take the windows 7 key (which i know) and use it to install windows 7 with a repair disk or something to the new pc?

Yes, you can use it on the new PC as long as it is no longer used on the old PC (and you have a retail code). Use it to install windows, then activate windows (right-click "my computer" then click properties). You have to jump through a few hoops like calling an automated system and entering codes, then you should be good to go.

If the Windows on your old computer is an OEM or DSP version then it is married to the motherboard and can't be installed on a new computer. If it was a retail version then if you uninstall it off the old computer, and then you can legally install it on your new computer.

Sorry, school and all... Thanks for the answers; my windows 7 came with the computer, would that still work? And if so, could you tell me where a good step by step tutorial might be?

Pre-installed Windows is almost always OEM and cannot be transferred to another computer.

If it came with the system, usually it is OEM, unless you also received the Windows retail box and manuals with your computer, then it would be retail product, and okay for transfer.

Call Microsoft and give them your product key and ask. Most of the time, you can have multiple installs on the same license because they're aware that computers will fail etc. It worked for me, I just went through the process last Monday because I got a new Hard Drive as a boot drive so I had to re-install OS.
