Hey guys, about to pick up an ASUS GTX 780 DirectCU II but had no idea that there was an 'OC' version. I thought that was a given and it was all the same card.

Anyway, I've just compared them both and the only difference I can see is the GPU Base clock and the GPU Boost clock.

Standard
GPU Boost Clock : 902 MHz
GPU Base Clock : 863 MHz
£385

OC version
GPU Boost Clock : 941 MHz
GPU Base Clock : 889 MHz
£469

That extra £85 seems a bit crazy for an extra few MHz that I can probably just make up for when I overclock it anyway...?

Am I missing something else?

Thanks.

don't get the overclocked edition. With that much more money you can buy the classy or lightning. OC versions sometimes have higher binning but its not worth £85 which is like the premium you pay when you get the ultimately binned lightning and classy edition(comes with other oc features and software) (classy and lightnings could have more volts and they have dual bioses and custom bioses

That GPU could be seriously obsolete by April and only worth £85.

The baby Maxwell is out(750ti). Appears the new architecture is very strong and efficient. Double the performance per watt. Do you really want an old 28nm GPU that is only going to be as strong as a low-end 125 watt Maxwell?

I wouldn't spend a dime right now.

Yeah, I'm gonna ignore the OC version, seems daft. Will stick with ASUS this time round though. Already ordered the Maximus VI Formula and reckon ASUS deliver continuously... We'll see...

Cheers

Really, obsolete by April?... Do you think if I wait after April I could SLI the 780 for £200!? :p
I've already ordered everything else. I can always upgrade the card next year if it becomes rubbish in the space of a few months but I'm not overly bothered about playing metro in 4K or anything or having the bleeding edge kit - I'm just after a solid rig. However, what do you reckon the chances are of them introducing new maxwell cards next month?...
Ta.

But could I overclock the standard one to the same level, or is the OC version particularly suited to overclocking somehow? What's that actual technological difference?

Most are just factory overcloxks done from the manafacturer unless its tge superclocked where there might just be a better parts used. Either ways if overclocking make sure u have a good cooling system inside ur chasis

Oh yeah, cooling should be fine, a few 140mm fans inside the Define R4 XL. There's a Dark Rock Pro 3 in there too and I plan on two more 140s by fractal...

Cheers Caj.

DirectCU is much better and way cheaper. It runs cooler, so GPU boost 2.0 will work much better, thus probably adds an extra 10mhz or so. Also, you can just overclock the card.. For FREEEE. The asus should include their own overclocking tool. I also have a direct cu II. A 760 factory clocked version. Although, can't seem to get it to work on my computer yet

The next gen may be out as early as this month(late March). We'll all be wanting the successor to the Radeon 7979/280X or GTX 680/770.

But ya... if depreciation isn't a concern, you can buy a 780 right now. Junk it in the fall when Asus has their entire new line out and there is good availability.
