It is a sapphire tri-x 290 and GPU-z is reading it as having 2816 shaders... my other 290 is also a tri-x and it has the normal 2560... all the numbers on this 2nd card are higher (texture fill rate, ROPS/TMUs)

Now the card runs fine and all but... what is up with this? It's basically a 290x according to GPU-z

Aim... why? Why is it bad if the card is running properly but reads as a higher card?

I am just trying to figure out how this happens? The box says 290. I have heard of people unlocking their cards from 290 to 290x but I didn't do that, it came like this...

^ to be more specific they need the same chip. for example tahiti chip can be crossfired with another tahiti chip regardless of chip configuration. the only downside is combining the two will force the faster card to match the performance of slower card. so CFing 7970 and 7950 will result the same performance as two 7950 not some thing between 7950CF and 7970CF

^^^ exactly. so basically I am still running two 290s... You can crossfire a 290 with a 290x. I've just never heard of someone ordering a 290 getting a 290 package and having the card read as a 290x
