I am little bit confise of your post...
- you have a problem with vmplayer install
- once installed, your virtual machine cannot boot

I am not Mint fan, but I had no problems installing vmPlayer on off-the-shelf Debian.
As for your bootable medium - when you start your VM, it will need (as a computer) where to boot from - either a real CD/DVD, ISO image, or already installed disk image. Where are you struck here?

@Balaj - my cryrstal ball broke last year, and I have lost my magic abilities to read minds, and to look at computers across the continent. Little Bing'ing brought this tutorial http://www.howtoforge.com/how-to-install-vmware-player-..., how you installed your version? And then, on booting - did you actuially configure a VM? How you plan to install your WinXP on it?
