Hi all,

Sorry for the re-post, but my question wasn't really answered before.
I have a Dell OptiPlex GX620 with 2 banks of 2 slots, currently using 2x 512 MB in one of the banks, the other empty. I have one 2 GB RAM module (same speed as the others, PC2-5300) that I would like to use. What is my best option?

a) keeping the 2x512 MB in the one bank and adding 1x 2GB in the other
b) filling only one bank, with 1x 512MB and 1x2GB
c) have 1x 512MB in one bank and 1x 2GB in the other (i.e. both banks half filled)
d) simply using the 1x2GB stick on its own

Someone said that forcing single channel mode by using method a) might cause a conflict. How likely is that? Would it damage anything or would it just be a matter of testing it and if it doesn't work trying one of the other methods?

Thanks!

a) won't work on dual channel, it will revert to single channel as soon as the ram config is asymmetrical. but it's correct, it can cause conflicts. physical damage is out of the question, it will run at the speed of the lowest speed ram in single channel mode.

i would try to run with a) and if there's any instability or errors on memtest switch to the single 2gb (d)
