I have two potential builds, one has a compatibility issue. Basically the Dimms I have ordered are overpowered. They require 1.6v

One is an intel/nvidia build (has the issue)

The other is an amd build.

The issue lies with the recommended max for the Intel i7-4770k being 1.5v
When the Dimms require 1.6v.
The msi mobo can handle the 2133Hz dimms but it's the cpu that flags up the issue. Will I be able to run the dimms higher without causing the cpu any strain or should I just run underclocked??

Solution
For editing the I7 makes perfect sense.

The RAM will run fine on the I7. Its just Intel being weird. No real world effect on Haswell using higher voltage RAM.
Both of your builds are lopsided.

Do not trust in Mantle too much. You can get an Intel CPU and an AMD card for possible Mantle benefits.

1. Why are you getting a Z87 overclocking board but not a K-series CPU?
2. An I5 is perfectly fine for gaming.
3. The FX9xxx series CPUs are power hungry mildly overclocked FX8350s that are NOT worth it.
4. Get a more reliable SSD. Like Samsung 840 EVO
5. You do not need RAM thats that fast, makes much more sense getting 1866HMz RAM and then just adjusting their speed yourself. G.skill Sniper 1866MHz are very good at that and most of them can get 2133MHz on 1.55v anyway.
6. Overpowered PSU that is not even that great quality. For the AMD setup 650W is more than enough, for the Intel you can go 550W and it would be enough.

The 1.65v RAM will work on either setup just fine.

Now give me some time to amend your build.

Alright.

Added a better quality PSU. If you ever want to add another R9 290, then get a 850W PSU.
Changed to 8GB of RAM, which is more than enough.
Much better SSD added.
Added much better motherboard too.
Dropped CPU to I5 as that makes sense for gaming. If you REALLY want the I7, get a 4770K.

This isn't a gaming build. I will be using it for gaming but mostly web/graphic design. Video editting and some 3d rendering. I plan on getting another gfx card in a year or two to run in sli/x-fire.
Anyway you haven't answered my question. What's the deal with running these dimms with the i7?
All everyone seems to do on these boards is suggest different builds. I only need to order the mobo, cpu amd gpu

This was my original thoughts. My mate who's an amd fanboy just scared me into changing it. My own ignorance is to blame for that. He said I might fry the mobo. Last time I listen to him.

LOL there were some isolated incidents on Ivy Bidge I3/5/7 3xxx having issues with higher than 1.55v RAM. But none reported for Haswell yet.

Well I'm pretty sure that the 3xxx would work with his RAM and honestly if he had a problem he could rma it.
