This was in the release notes: "Hangs and stuttering resolved for the Mantle codepath in Battlefield 4™"

I still get it...does this simply mean it isn't optimized for 7xxx series cards yet?

Solution
'better optimised' currently yes, due to the fact that other graphics cards still experiencing problems with mantle. But that's not AMD's aim, the aim is to benefit their entire range with possible more emphasis on lower end cards.

Out of the box you will no doubt get much better performance and the fact that with my 7950, mantle works, I don't doubt it will work for the 7970.

I would say though, I wouldn't advise using ultra settings - not because they're too demanding (I personally haven't played too much with it on), but the fact that the difference between high and ultra isn't massively noticeable at all, and for the sake of a good 5-10 fps, I would not advise it.
But of course, that's for when you get your new card :p

As azzazel said, Mantle is currently not 'fixed'. I wouldn't go as far as saying it's a joke because it is working with some graphics cards 'namely my 7950'.

THE BOTTOM LINE:
Mantle is most likely not currently supported, well, well optimised, I should say for your 7870 yet. Here's probably why:

Mantle was made to boost FPS in games where graphics cards would lag behind, currently the largest sum of graphics card are using the Tahiti GPU contained in the 7950/70 and R9 280x (with 280 coming soon).
My guess is support, for the Pitcairn GPU (what you currently have) will come soon after they have patched up all the most common GPU's and once it's working it will probably work well with BF4. I imagine once the hawaii architecture and pitcairn are both working right, they'll update Mantle fully to work with them.

Until that point, keep updating your beta drivers to see if you can get the best performance if you're hasty, or you can of course, revert back to an older driver if you find it's more stable in game.

and obviously just out of the box I will be getting better performance.

Cool thanks...yea with my 7870 I had AA turned off (cause I cant tell much of a difference at 1080p...a little), and HBAO, and post processing to low (high seems almost blurry)...but I had all other settings on high, but the top two, those are ticked to ultra...and Id get very playable FPS with my 7870...40-65.
