Hi!

I am currently upgrading my computer, but I'm having trouble determining whether or not I should also buy a new PSU.

So my future specs are going to be:
a rotating hard drive (don't remember which)
Samsung 840 EVO 120GB
MSI Z87-G45 Gaming
i5-4670k
MSI Radeon R9 280X GAMING 3G
4x 4 gb DDR3
cooler master 690 II plus
2 fans

I currently have the following PSU: Seasonic S12II-Bronze 520W.

Should I upgrade my PSU or not? I have read conflicting sources. If I have to upgrade, is the Seasonic M12II 620W a "good enough" upgrade?

Solution

Haswell compatible PSUs are easy to find since any reputable PSU manufacturer that puts out a new PSU these days makes sure that it is compatible.

If you're overclocking the CPU, and it requires a bump up in voltage to do so, then you will need a new PSU.

If the CPU and GPU are only going to be run at their stock factory clocks then you don't need to upgrade the PSU but you should disable the C6/C7 low power states in the BIOS to prevent any potential problems with the system being unable to wake up from those power states.

Hi - A lot of people suggest more power than you need. Enemy1 is correct, your system needs at
least 30 +12v amps and your PSU has 40 +12v amps. No need to upgrade.

You're citing an article from 8 months ago.

My friend bought a Z87 chipset motherboard along with an i7-4770K back in October and the C6/C7 power state option in the BIOS was not disabled by default as stated in the article that you linked to.

If a potential problem can be avoided during an upgrade or at the time of planning a new build then that is what should be done.
