Hi all. Helping a friend with their laptop here. I've read some threads about this but not finding anything to solve the issue. Seems pretty typical...shocked it's coming to this.
HDD failed, purchased new one, installed same windows (7 home premium x64), cannot activate with Microsoft activation key on back of laptop. Microsoft website says MUST be same service pack...but Toshiba can't tell us which service pack (if any) it came with. I called Toshiba and Microsoft and nobody could help. Microsoft asked me to call back in AM hours to speak to tech support. It really shouldn't be this difficult...the key is there, hard drives fail... this is all common stuff! Should've been a very simple phone activation.
Some Info:
No backup discs. Toshiba has them for $30 but no point in buying b/c software is outdated and we have the key (right???). Owners did not make backup disks and HDD recovery partition is inaccessible. We actually had the laptop inspected at a windows store and diagnosed.
If the key was used too many times (HIGHLY DOUBT IT, someone suckered these ppl into buying an entire new copy previously), wouldn't Microsoft be able to clearly identify that instead of not giving me any answer at all as to why it won't activate???
I'm pretty irritated...we have a legible key on the back of the laptop. We have have the same windows version that the laptop came with. Why won't this activate and what's up with Microsoft activation phone support not knowing their butts from a hole in the ground?!?!?
