Hi there!

This will all depend upon whether or not the bios is locked to that i3. Can you please run CPU-Z and take note of the bios you have then come back and let me know, thanks.

Then your answer is yes you can upgrade to the i7 at least in theory. Please note though that the i7 does draw more power than the i3, so there could be issues with heat dissipation and, depending on the motherboard, there could be power issues as well. That said, as long as you are careful there shouldn't be too much of a problem with the upgrade.

Just for one final check, what does CPU-Z say about your motherboard? Name, serial number etc?

Ah ok. That motherboard should definitely support the i7 in that case :)  As for the 32/45nm difference it does not matter. That particular socket supports i5's made using the 32nm process and i7's made using the 45nm process as seen here http://www.cpu-world.com/Sockets/Socket%20G1%20%28rPGA9... So don't be concerned with that :)

Dear General07,
please would you be so kind to let me know if that worked at the end? I've the same identical issue going with the same pieces/charateristics on and before buying I need the ultimate proof that is working please.

Thanks a lot.

Dear AdmiralDonut,
I have the same question for Toshiba A500-1GL. Bios Toshiba 2.00 11/18/10, MB NSKAA.
Tried to put i7 in, but fan starts for 5 sec. and then nothing, no booting at all.
Thanks for any help.
