My 660 ti that I got as an exchange after having to rma my 7870 twice will be here today. I have since bought a gtx 770 and im using that as my main card. the 660 ti is going the be the physx card (no comments on physx not being worth it etc.).

My question is, since the gtx 6xx series and 7xx series seem to have their own drivers do I need to install both, or will the physx software than came with the 7xx driver handle any generation of card as long as its doing physx only?

Can anybody second. This is my first time with physx or nvidia at all for that matter.

To be clear, when you go to the Nvidia download section and it gives you all the drop down menus to select your type of graphics card, select the GTX 770. The GTX 660 Ti won't be doing graphics, so it will just use the PhysX software that comes with the GTX 770 drivers. The drivers contain compatibilities for all their graphics cards, so it's pretty much a no-brainer anyway.
