Hey guys, I just finished a new build and I was wondering what idle temps people were experiencing with this CPU. I chose the Noctua because I had heard that these CPUs tend to run hot, but 40 degrees seems high for just running the BIOS.

Thoughts? Full Specs Below.

Case - Thermaltake Chaser Mk1
CPU - Intel Core i7 4770k
MoBo - Gigabyte GA-Z87x-UD4H
RAM - G.Skill Sniper Series 1866 (16gb)
GPU - GeForce 4GB GTX 770 OC2
Cooler - Noctua NH-D14
SSD - Samsung 840 Pro Series 128gb
HDD - Seagate 3TB @7200 rpm
Pioneer BluRay Burner

10-15c. over ambient would be about normal.
40c in a normal room is not far out of line.
Also, it takes a bit of time for the thermal paste to spread and reach maximum effectiveness.
I think in a few weeks, your temps will get a bit better.

One caveat: If you use too much paste, it can act as an insulator. It is hard to use too little.
Only a small drop or a thin line is needed.

Haswell actually runs cool until you overclock to high levels.
What a high level is for your particular chip is mostly dependent on your luck in getting a golden chip.

With an average chip, I might expect 4.2-4.5 as a reasonable expectation.
