I just acquired a Dell Optiplex 760 USFF and would like to know if anyone's used it with Windows XP 64-Bit?

Solution
XP 64 driver support is not nearly as bad as you make it out to be Pinhedd. Maybe mid 2000's it was, but increasing adoption of 64 bit windows brought a whole lot of XP 64 bit support along for the ride.
Yes it will. However, Windows XP x64 edition uses a kernel that is only found in one other product, Windows Server 2003 R2. It is not simply a 64 bit version of Windows XP, so some applications may not work. Furthermore, drivers can be very hard to find.

I found this from Dell:

http://ftp.dell.com/Browse_For_Drivers/Desktops/Optiplex/OptiPlex%20760/

From looking at this, it does look like it will work. What do you think?

sorry, I was addressing the OP and wondering what he's planning to use the PC for.

I used to run Windows XP x64 in the mid 2000s so I've got a pretty good idea of how the support stands. It's not a pretty picture right now and many manufacturers have dropped support for it.

I was going to install Microsoft Office 2003 Professional and Mixcraft 6. I just want to be able to use more ram in a Windows XP environment.

I tried Windows XP 64Bit on a different PC and it worked but the only thing missing was the audio drivers. I saw that Dell has drivers but I wanted to make sure that they worked on Optiplex 760 USFF before investing more time.

There should be no issues running Windows 8 on that PC. Drivers for all the components should be available. If you're unsure, you can download the Windows 8.1 trial to find out.

Dell has only a few proprietary hardware components, and these are typically found in their servers. The rest are just dell-branded components from other manufacturers that use fairly standard drivers. I'm not aware of Dell having any Audio chips of their own, so it's most likely just some random Realtek/CMedia chip.

You do know I'm asking about Windows XP 64-Bit and not Windows 8.

Yes I am well aware of that. Driver support for consumer products under Windows XP x64 is almost non-existent and those that do exist are often horribly buggy. Server hardware is well supported because it's the same kernel as Windows Server 2003 R2, but that's not helpful here.

The programs that you listed run just fine under newer versions of Windows, and Windows 8/8.1 both make very efficient use of memory.

Furthermore, while Windows XP x64 is more secure than Windows XP by design, it will lose its support next month alongside Windows XP.
