Hello,
I recently built my own PC (roughly a week or two ago), and everything was fine.
I downloaded motherboard drivers and GPU drivers, however, sometimes when booting up - I get a black screen; Motherboard (Asus) splash logo comes up, 'Logging in.. spinning circle', but (sometimes) then, a black screen. I can still move the mouse though; any help would be appreciated.

Specs:
Windows 8.1
R9 270X
AMD FX-8320
ASUS M5A97 R2.0
CORSAIR CX600M
2X4GB RAM
64GB SSD (boot drive)
1TB HDD

Thanks!

I had this exact issue and it turned out to be a faulty stick of RAM. Try removing all sticks except the first one and see if you still get the black screen, if not then take that stick out and try another until you get a black screen then you'll know who the culprit is.

If you can get into Windows, run the Memory Diagnostic Tool--it'll restart your computer and run the diagnostic to check you're memory for problems. Once you've done that you'll for sure it's not your memory and we can try something else.
