You didn't mention the keyboard type but my first suspicion is something caught under the keys. Have you used canned air? Pulled the keys off to look at the switches (look online for how to do so on your keyboard)?

Well, based by the chevron instead of a period, it's actually your shift key. Try popping it off with a knife or something, it won't damage it. See if there is something cracked, damaged, sticky, or otherwise off underneath the key.
