4 slots in my motherboard. Mixing ram ??

Ive got 4 ram slots in my motherboard. Ive got 2x4gb corsair 1600mhz ram, but i also have 2x2gb corsair 1600mhz ram from my old computer. Can i put 2x4gb in slot 1 and 2, and 2x2gb in slot 3 and 4 Making a total of 12gb ram??
I know its a newbie question but thanks for answering.

What motherboard is it ? You should have blue and black slots. If so match ram to match color slots. As in 2 sticks of 4gb in blue and 2 sticks of 2gb in black. Or vice versa but do not mix them up. If they are both corsair and same speed there shouldn't be too many problems if you install them all.

My motherboard: Asus M5A97 R2.0 AMD 970/ SB950 Motherboard DDR3
yes theyre all corsair 1600mhz. So i will not have any problems if i install them all? (2x4gb in blue and 2x2gb in black)
Anyway i can test if theyre all working properly??
