Intel 4670k Boxed CPU Cooler Issues - I Think

Intel 4670K running WAY too hot. For reference, here's my build: http://pcpartpicker.com/b/Lib. I've tried to tidy up the cables, but it's a rather snug fit. There is a clear path from the front fan to the CPU/Mobo. I'm using Core Temp to monitor temps.

I've been having heat issues anytime the load approaches 100% on any of the cores. Earlier I reached 96 on one core, so I decided to open her up and throw in the side fan that came with the case. I opted not to do this initially because a daughterboard on the mobo blocks it and the 60mm fan's buzzing is already driving me crazy.

Well, the extra chassis fan didn't help. I think the stock CPU cooler is giving me problems. I'll hear it run when I boot the machine, but very seldom after. I jumped in the BIOS and have played with the CPU fan options. When I set it to turbo or certain manual options it will run more often, but it does not constantly run even in temps excess of 80. Today while the case was off I watched the CPU fan and it would run strong for a minute or two and temps would start to drop. Then, inexplicably, it would stop. Without action on my end it would trudge, stop, trudge, stop, trudge, run and run strong. Rinse, repeat. The machine has never shut down on me, but I have cancelled the video encoding I was doing and reboot the machine to be greeted by two BIOS warnings. First was a heat warning - press F1 to setup. Then I received a CPU cooler error - press F1 to setup.

Question: WTH is going on? Is there something in the BIOS settings I can adjust to get the CPU cooler to run constantly or as it should? I'd really like to not futz with the hardware any further (unless I'm upgrading!). Nothing is obstructing the CPU fan and it does spin as intended. Just not as often as intended.

Thanks in advance.

Replace the CPU fan, they aren't expensive and you don't need a stock one, pick up whatever works for your budget or case. Make sure to clean off your CPU and put new paste down (only the size of a small pea).

Thanks for the responses. Spoke with Intel today and it does sound like a bum heatsink. They're sending a replacement. I'll go aftermarket when the need arises, but when the fan actually worked temps. were good.

Um, RobCrezz those are sick heatsinks and all, but I'm guessing you didn't click through to the pics of my build? I agree though, I do need a better cooler.
