Is svchost a virus? brand new computer and saw some people say svchost was a virus

It's most likely (99.9%) part of Windows and is not harmful.

That is a critical system process. There are times that malware can mask itself, but unless you have real concerns about the performance, and the chanced it's been infected, it's nothing to worry about.
