hi
this is what i have
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103871

i was just doing minimal work on my desktop when all of a sudden the fans went extremely loud. the processor temp went from around 30C to 79C in just a few sec!

i turned my pc off immediately and felt heat coming out of the case. the heat sink was actually really hot as well. (i figured it would be really dusty, but it wasnt)

im scared to turn it back on. what could have caused this? is it safe to replace the heatsink with something better (currently using stock)? is my processor dead?

before this, there were times when my cpu temp went up around 50C+ and i wasnt even doing anything

- this random heat spike just started happening this month

On Intel coolers is is most times dust(you checked this) or loose pins.

AMD coolers should not have this issue.

Please have a good look to ensure the plastic tabs and heatsink retention system is not damaged. If for any reason the heatsink is no longer pressed firmly on the cpu, that would happen.

If it is damaged a new cooler would be a good option, if not, try to remove/clean and replace the thermal paste to see if it is better.

I highly doubt you killed the cpu with this. They have a thermal shut down before damage should happen.
I suggest you do a malware and virus scan on your computer. Something is causing your CPU to kick into full load without you doing anything, you may have a cryptocurrency miner, or something else that is activating in the background.

79 celsius is hot for an AMD CPU, but it won't destroy your CPU unless you hit that temp for extended periods of time, so your CPU should be alright. You may want to blow any dust out of your fans and case to improve cooling efficiency, as AMD's stock cooler should be able to cool the CPU a bit better than that, as AMD doesn't recommend that their CPUs go above 63 celsius.
