Pluging router into Hotel Network causing guest IP errors

I have been told not to plug my WIFI router into the hotel network socket but only plug my laptop into it because the router (which is accessed by my ipad and laptop) is causing ip errors in guest computers of other rooms.

I live in the Hotel as part of my job contract so Im here for another 5 months. Is there a way to use my router without causing the IP errors? I am not too computer literate so I don't know what kind of errors they are talking about.

But I have a linksys wrt54gl. I have been told it is possible to reconfigure it to solve the problem but I was not told how. I am just guessing here but is the best solution to enable VPN on the router if it has such a feature? If not please tell me what the best solution is.

Regards, David

You are likely plugging a LAN port into the hotel. You either need to plug the WAN port in and configure it as a real router but this will depend on if you need a vpn from your PC some are a pain to get to run in this form. This is your best bet to not conflict with the hotel if it will meet all your needs.

You can use it connected to the LAN port but you must turn off the DHCP in your router and change your IP to something else. Since you have no control of the hotel ip I would assign your router something out of the 10.x.x.x range since it is unlikely you duplicate a hotel address. You would have to change your PC address to something in that range also if you needed to modify the config of your router.

On the wireless side you want to use a different SSID than the hotel and make sure you have WPA/WPA2 turned on so you do not compromise the hotels security.
