so my harddrive is set up for my pc, (which ill sell when i get mac)

i watch tvs shows on my tv that i downloaded on pc and then plug usb 3.0 hdd into my smart tv

since i will have to reformat the harddrive to support the mac read/write (copying tv shows)

should the reformated harddrive then work on my samsung smart tv ?

You can format the external drive as FAT32 if you are happy with a 4 GB file size limitation. Otherwise you can leave it as NTFS (which is presumably what it is currently) and install an appropriate driver on the Mac to allow it to write to an NTFS drive. Don't use the native OS X format - your TV won't recognize that.

4gb file ? i dont have anything that is 4gb alone everything i have currently mounts up to around 300gb, most files are 150mb - 800mb

games from steam etc will be on laptop itself

I'm surprised - HD recording can quickly exceed 4 GB. Anyway, as that's not a problem stick with FAT32; that will work on both devices without any modification. Unfortunately it means that you won't be able to use the drive for Time Machine backups (one of the neatest features of OS X).
