Metal Fatigue Crashing During Gameplay

So, the problem began like this:

I was well into several hours into ONE mission (on easy mind you). I believe it was the third or fourth of the "blue" faction, the mission when you square off against two other opponents and the one when you finally get air troops. I had a massive force of mechas (or "Combat Bots") ready and assembled. I saved, then sent them all at the enemy base. Two seconds later, the game crashed on me.

I tried again, booting up my save file and I played - up to two or three minutes, saved, then the game crashed. I was starting to get annoyed.

I tried AGAIN, booting up my save file, completely destroying the enemy base and began mass building my units. The game crashed.

I tried ONE LAST TIME, booting up my save file, completely destroying my enemy base (again, but then again there wasn't much left) and I tried to rally my troops for one last push, sending a lone fighter to scout out the last enemy stronghold. You guessed it, the game crashed.

It was working perfectly before, why now? Is it because I've been playing for too long? Do I have too many units on at the same time? What's up? I mean, I'm just trying to complete a mission. There is no prompt where it says "game has crashed unexpectedly - blah blah blah", nope, none of that. It just kicks me out to my desktop.

I currently have three torrents downloading, three paused and one queued. I'm also performing a system scan on the computer as I type. Also, I may or may not have...unconventionally obtained this game... It still works perfectly, except that the intro may be a little messed up. (I'll try getting a hard copy of this game if they even sell it still)

This is a great game mind you, one of THE BEST RTS games I've played. It rivals that of Command and Conquer, Starcraft (I dare say - is better than Starcraft), Supreme Commander, and god damned Rome Total War (1), WHICH IS STILL CRASHING ON ME! I enjoyed playing this game, not because I'm getting back into the mecha genre, but because the way they implemented the ability to fight in THREE battlefields at the same time: Orbit, Surface and Underground. The fact that you get to STEAL your enemies' technology and create new mechas out of it is a concept I can't believe wasn't implemented in other games.

This game is fantastic, but the crashing bit is getting on my nerves. It better be a virus, because if it isn't I'm going to have a field day with Google.

I love that game! I purchased a legal copy for myself but then tried to make copies of the discs back in the day for a lan party. Another case of piracy not working correctly, I could for whatever reason also never get the copied disks, ISO images etc to work correctly, very similar results to what you are describing. Each copy of the game would crap out at different points. I know this isn't an answer, just wanted to let you know you aren't experiencing a unique event.

Oh really? Thanks for the info! I'll try to as save as spasmodically as I can.
