If I wasn't planning on crossfire, could I have, say, a 7870 and a 7790 in the same system, one powering games etc and one for mining cryptocurrency?

Solution
Yes, you can have two different cards in one system. I have a 7870 GHZ Ed mining Litecoins slowly, while I game on a 7870 LE. Two different cores, so I can't crossrire, but both are in there running fine. Long as you have the room and the PSU you can do it, I had a 7970 in there too for a while, but my brother built another mining computer and needed it back.

Bitcoin mining. Bitcoins are an online currency that are used for anonymous payments mostly with Tor and/or the dark net. Calculating the cryptographic key is very complex and some people run the calculations on their GPU for a share of the bitcoins they generate, which is called mining. He is mining with one GPU and playing with the other.

Using both cards in crossfire for gaming is not possible. You need the same model with the same amount of VRAM. There is no way around that. I have heard from several sources that they are mining with two different cards though.
